‘For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”’ 1 Peter 2:6 (NIV).
Mount Zion was once a Jebusite stronghold conquered by King David which became the capital for his kingdom (2 Samuel 5:6-9). However, Zion is used in both the Old and New Testaments as more than a location. Zion is referred to as the place of God’s dwelling and God’s people are called ‘people of Zion.’ Zion is the realm where God is manifest. In the midst of this realm, our God lays a chosen and precious cornerstone, His son, Jesus Christ.
Peter portrays the people of Zion as a living, spiritual house, with Jesus Christ as the foundation and cornerstone and each believer as a stone. We are dependent upon each other to build the church, just as it takes many stones to erect a home. And we are dependent upon Christ, the cornerstone which supports and undergirds the entire church. Without the cornerstone, the main support, the building will collapse.
Yet the stone that really counts in the building of the church is also ‘the stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall’ (verse 8). Some will stumble over Christ because they reject him or refuse to believe that Jesus is who He says He is.
Rejection of Christ the cornerstone, will eventually result in shame and judgement. People who refuse to believe in Christ have stumbled over the one person who could save them and give meaning to their lives.
Prayer:
‘Heavenly Father, forgive me for putting anything else before you. Only when you are the main cornerstone of my life and the life of the church will the world see and understand who you really are. Show me what needs changing Lord. Thank you.’
In Jesus’ Mighty Name,
AMEN!
Final Thoughts:
Is Christ the cornerstone of our life and church family? We are not the cornerstone and the ministries and activities of our church are not the cornerstone. Christ is. Everything else must come after Him.
Not before. Is it time to reorder our affections and ensure that our devotion is to Christ alone? Christ is the precious cornerstone that must be the most important part of our life and our church. He alone is the one who really counts in the building of a home that will honor and glorify Him.
