Holding Back

‘Esther had not revealed her nationality and family background, because Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.’ Esther 2:10 (NIV).

Esther was in a vulnerable position. With virtually no rights and little access to the king, it was best for her not reveal her true identity. There would be a time for boldness once her favor and acceptance as a women full of faithfulness and integrity could be proven.

There is a time for holding back. A time which requires us to show what we are really like before we reveal who we really are. A time for us to prove our credibility as people of God before we can say we are people of God. Then that is the time we will be taken seriously, just as Esther was.

While God calls us to be bold in stating our faith, we often need to employ a strategy before we voice our identity. When we keep quiet we have the opportunity to win the right to be heard. This is especially true when dealing with those in authority.

If we brashly rush in and declare our faith in God and what we believe, we may ruin the chance to ever speak of our faith again. A better tactic is to go slow and pray for wisdom to know when is the right time. In the meantime, our behavior can be the witness that speaks, rather than our words.

Prayer:

‘Heavenly Father, there are those I want to share my faith with. Help me to wait and watch for the leading of your Spirit. I trust that when you tell me to speak, you will also give me the words to share with a spirit of love and grace. Thank you.’

In Jesus’ Mighty Name,

AMEN!

Final Thoughts:

Sharing our faith among work colleagues can be challenging. When to speak? What to say? How to go about even beginning conversations around faith issues are often pressing concerns that we hold in question. When in doubt wait. Pray and quietly ask the Spirit for the right time.

God is in no rush, and so we can be at ease knowing that He will show us when, what and how. Like Esther, our words given by the Spirit of God, can have power and impact is we choose to hold back until He shows us when to speak.
