Resolving Differences

‘I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord.’ Philippians 4:2 (NIV).

These two women had been workers for Christ in the church. Their broken relationship was no small matter, because many had become believers through their united efforts. In every church there is often conflict in relationships.

The names of these women give us a clue as to what can happen amongst fellow believers. Euodia comes from a word that means ‘a fair journey.’ Syntyche comes from a word that can mean ‘an accident.’ Along our fair journey we may collide with another, but God always provides grace for restoration.

We may have already discovered that it is possible to believe in Christ, work hard for His kingdom, and yet have broken relationships with others who are committed to the same cause. What are we to do about that? There is no reason to remain unreconciled. Christ would call us to settle disagreement and be restored with one mind.

Do we need to be reconciled with someone today? If we are facing a conflict that can’t be resolved, let’s not allow the tension to build so that we explode in anger. Remember that this is never a disagreement between just two people. Others will be dragged into our mess and the body of Christ, will be tarnished.

Prayer:

‘Heavenly Father, you see the struggle I am involved in just now and the damage it is bringing to relationships. Help me to move beyond my anger and reach out in love and grace so that there will be restoration and unity. Thank you.’

In Jesus’ Mighty Name,

AMEN!

Final Thoughts:

Differences can be resolved. And they must -but not on their own. It takes deliberate intention, plenty of grace and a desire to not bring the church into disrepute.

If we are involved in conflict just now that seems to have come to a headway, it may be time to bring the matter to those who will help us find a way forward that results in reconciliation and peace.

Be Greatly Blessed!
