Idolatory

‘King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.’

It’s safe to say that anyone who builds a thirty meter high statue to themselves probably has an issue with pride and insecurity. Nebuchadnezzar expected everyone to worship the statue built in his honor and flew into a rage when anyone dared to disobey his command. As the supreme ruler of Babylonia, he expected absolute obedience. But his demands were unjust and his reactions extreme.

We all have a little Nebuchadnezzar in us. We usually don’t build thirty meter statues of ourselves, but we get upset when people don’t bow down to our wishes. We wouldn’t throw those who disobey us into a fiery furnace, but we will let our anger heat up when we don’t get our way. We seek worship in more subtle ways. We exaggerate in conversation, put others down behind their back and tell white lies to hide the compromising parts of our life.

If we don’t find our security in Christ and what He has accomplished for us on the cross, we will try other avenues to hide our insecurities. We will fight our own battles, create our own opportunities and go to extreme measures, just as King Nebuchadnezzar did, to establish our own reputation.

Those who build monuments to themselves are those who think little of themselves. They need others to think highly of them, because they are dissatisfied in themselves. Those with low self-esteem attempt to build themselves up by self-exaltation or by putting others down or both. It seems the more insecure a person is, the more monuments they deed to build.

Prayer:

‘Heavenly Father, for me to live in service to you, I must find my true identity and value in you alone. Thank you Jesus for your death and resurrection. Because of this I can live just as I am, whole, fulfilled and free in you.’

In Jesus’ Mighty Name,

AMEN!

Final Thoughts:

If we find ourselves behaving this way, know that we are not serving God any longer, but rather serving ourselves. We are no longer laying our lives on an altar of sacrifice to God, but we are instead building a monument to ourselves. And that’s idolatry.
