Encouraging Others

‘Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.’ 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV).

As competitors near the end of a long, arduous race, their legs are throbbing in agony, their throat burns for a cool drink, and their whole body cries out to stop and collapse on the ground.

That is when friends and fans are most valuable. That is when they can spur the runner on just a little longer with shouts of cheer and praises. It is when their encouragement helps push the runner through their pain to the finish line. And that is how Christians are to encourage one another.

A word of encouragement offered at the right moment can be the difference between finishing well and collapsing along the way. Proverbs 15:23 reminds us that there is joy both for the receiver and the giver when an apt and timely word of encouragement is given.

In fact it is as beautiful as ‘apples of gold in settings of silver’ (Proverbs 25:11). For those we know who are discouraged, worn out and tired, our encouraging words can be instrumental in bringing about victory rather than defeat in their current situation.

Prayer:

‘Father, thank you for the opportunities you present to me to encourage those I live and work with. Holy Spirit, lead me in ways to encourage and support those who are close to me, so that they may be blessed today. Thank you.’

In Jesus’ Mighty Name,

AMEN!

Final Thoughts:

So many people around us need encouragement. Each day we have many opportunities to support and inspire family members, fellow workers, and even total strangers. In what way can we offer support and encouragement to those around us?

Let’s affirm those we work alongside or live with, knowing that this will make their job easier and give them a willingness to work. Let’s expect only from others what we expect of ourselves.

Placing high demands or standards on others only burdens them. Let’s be patient with those who are slow or easily distracted. Everyone learns and works differently. Begin and end with encouragement, for people loved to be thanked for a job well done.

Be Greatly Blessed!
