Empty Words

‘Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of gifts he does not give.’ Proverbs 25:14 (NIV).

Clouds that carry no water and a wind that brings no refreshing rain – that’s what we are like when we boast of a gift that we don’t have. Most churches and para-church organizations depend on the gifts of people to keep their ministries alive and thriving. But many who promise to give often fail to follow through on their pledges. The effect brings the same discouragement and disappointment as waterless clouds and a wind that carries no rain.

But there is more to this proverb than a warning of financial matters. The symbols of clouds, wind and rain are significant. Clouds are often a metaphor for the people of God filled with glory (Hebrew 12:1). Wind is an emblem of the Holy Spirit bringing new life (John 3:6-8). Rain often points to teaching the revelation-truths that refresh and water the seeds of spiritual growth (Isaiah 55:8-11).

God’s anointed people are to be clouds carried by the wind of the Holy Spirit that brings refreshing truths to His people. When we are empty or speak what is false, we are like clouds and wind without rain (2 Peter 2:17).

Are we offering others in the Body of Christ refreshing, life-giving words of truth? Are our conversations seasoned with words that are Spirit-inspired? Are our conversations full of hope, faith, joy and peace? And do we speak with honesty and integrity ensuring that what we say we will do and give, is actually done? If so, we are the clouds and wind that bring the pleasure of refreshment to another.

Prayer:

‘Heavenly Father, show me whereabouts my words are not lining up with my actions. Help me to be the one who brings words and acts of kindness that refresh those who are in need today.’

In Jesus’ Mighty Name,

AMEN!

Final Thoughts:

Are we offering others in the Body of Christ refreshing, life-giving words of truth? Are our conversations seasoned with words that are Spirit-inspired? Are our conversations full of hope, faith, joy and peace? And do we speak with honesty and integrity ensuring that what we say we will do and give, is actually done? If so, we are the clouds and wind that bring the pleasure of refreshment to another.

God’s people are those who bring the gift that they have promised. They are led by the Spirit, bringing a message full of words of hope and healing, gifts of love and kindness, actions of service and sacrifice. Whatever they say, they intend to do; nothing is too much for them. Consider where we find ourselves in this story. What is God asking of us today?

Be Greatly Blessed!
